The Ghost Audit

The 12-point diagnostic to find out if your SaaS actually exists in France for ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, before spending a euro on translated content.

A SaaS client came to me with a well-ranked English site, clean translation, solid domain authority. We ran one test: we asked ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini in French to recommend a tool in their category. Their brand did not appear once. Their French competitor, with weaker metrics, was cited by all three.

The issue was not the translation. It was the absence of what I call Hybrid Authority: the combination of entity signals, passage extractability, and agentive structure that LLMs use to decide who to cite. This diagnostic gives you that picture in 12 questions.

Block A — Off-site entity coherence
Question 1 / 12
Does your company have a Wikidata entry or structured French-language presence (not just a translation)?
LLMs use Knowledge Graph signals to identify entities. A translated page is not an entity. A Wikidata record, a French Wikipedia mention, or a structured local profile is.
Question 2 / 12
Do you have any French-language mentions in local directories, press, or partner sites, even minor ones?
Citation diversity in French-language sources tells LLMs your brand exists in this market. One mention from a French tech media or an industry listing counts more than ten more pages on your own site.
Question 3 / 12
When you search your brand name in French on Google and ask an LLM, does it consistently associate you with your product category?
Category-brand association is the first signal LLMs use to decide if you are a credible citation. If your brand does not appear in the same context as your product category in French, you are invisible for that query.
Block B — Passage extractability
Question 4 / 12
Do your key French pages contain 2 to 4 sentence passages that answer a question directly, without needing the rest of the page?
LLMs extract passages, not pages. If your answer is buried inside a paragraph that requires context from the surrounding page, the model skips it. Self-contained answer blocks are what get cited.
Question 5 / 12
Was your French content rewritten for a French-speaking buyer, or only translated word for word?
Translated content mirrors the source language structure, which often does not match how French buyers ask questions. Localized content uses the actual French query phrasing and buying context, which is what LLMs index against.
Question 6 / 12
Have you tested a typical commercial query in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini in French to check if your brand appears?
Most companies have never run this test. The gap between your English LLM presence and your French one is usually larger than expected, and it is the fastest way to measure the actual problem.
Block C — Agentive readability (WebMCP)
Question 7 / 12
Could an AI agent complete a key action on your site (demo request, free trial) without errors or broken flows?
AI agents are starting to browse and act on behalf of buyers. If your conversion flow breaks in an automated context, your site fails at the exact moment of intent.
Question 8 / 12
Do your conversion pages have a clear action structure (buttons, forms, labels) that is identifiable beyond the visual layer?
If your CTA is a background-image button with no accessible label, or your form fields are anonymous div elements, agents and LLMs see an empty page.
Question 9 / 12
Do your French pages include structured data (Schema.org) that describes your product, pricing, or organization?
Structured data is machine-readable metadata that LLMs and AI search engines use directly, independent of visual rendering.
Block D — French market specifics
Question 10 / 12
Do your pricing, legal notices, and support present the trust signals a French B2B buyer expects (GDPR mention, euro billing, French-language contact)?
A French procurement or legal team evaluating a SaaS tool will check these points in under 30 seconds. Missing any of them creates friction that no amount of content marketing can offset at the bottom of the funnel.
Question 11 / 12
Have you identified the 3 French competitors that LLMs currently cite on your main commercial query in French?
Your GEO strategy starts with knowing who owns the citation today. Identifying them tells you what signals to replicate and how far ahead they are.
Question 12 / 12
Do you have a GEO plan for French LLM visibility that is distinct from your Google SEO plan?
GEO and SEO overlap but they are not the same. A page ranked in position 3 on Google is not automatically cited by ChatGPT. The signals that build LLM citation require a separate and deliberate strategy.
